"How Can Graphic Design Help Save The Planet?" is a major international design conference being held at Sydney's Powerhouse Museum as part of the Sydney Design 09 Festival.
The conference date is Monday 3rd August 2009.
It's the inaugural conference for 'Design A Better World' – a banner for what is hoped will become a global initiative, encouraging designers from all the major disciplines to help make a difference in the way we work, rest and play... and therefore to the world in which we live.
The conference's terms of reference are centred around the premise that graphic design one way or another permeates almost every aspect of our daily lives. Given such ubiquity, it's timely that the design community engages in meaningful dialogue designed to provide ideas and inspiration which acknowledge and address the global challenges of climate change and over-population.
Chaired by Alan Saunders from ABC Radio's "By Design" program, the day long conference features a range of presentations from leading designers, environmentalists and educators and will conclude with a panel and audience discussion.
The conference will provide graphic designers and the broader community with significant and important insights into sustainability, both in the context of day to day practice and also from a global perspective. The speakers will be showcasing a broad range of projects and ideas designed to inspire a commitment to establishing the creative industry's proper place as a leader within the global community... a leader that can and will make a significant contribution to the planet's well-being.

"The timing of this conference is important and its outcomes have the potential to make a very significant contribution towards addressing the challenges that lie before us. We certainly anticipate this being a very significant event, not only for the industry, but also for the broader community."

"A paradigm shift from technology driven development to human centered development is underway. The focus is shifting from materialistic and visible values to those which are mental, intellectual and possibly less material. An era of ‘cultural productivity' has commenced, where the importance attributed to modes of life, values and symbols may be greater than that attributed to physical products. Design thinking stands steadfastly at the centre of this continuum. Simultaneously, this development highlights the importance of cultural traditions and the need to extend and revitalise them."
