When: 2nd June 2008
Time: 06:00pm
Stephen Banham and James de Vries share a passion for type though their fields of expertise and perspectives are very different.
Stephen Banham is the founder of Letterbox, a typographic studio in Melbourne. The basis of his work looks at the cultural and social aspects of typography – how we can engage and persuade a wider audience – the general public, in viewing it as an intrinsic part of our visual culture. He has written and produced fourteen publications on typography – Qwerty (1991-96), Ampersand (1997-2003) and Fancy (2004). Since 2005 he has run a very successful public forum series on graphic design and typography, known as Character. This year he started the series Obliques, limited editions that are wide ranging in scope – typographic explorations of themes such as the animals lost in space research through to Utopian language and micro-nations. Stephen's design work has been covered in almost every type annual as well as magazines such as Eye, Emigré and Face, he has spoken at international design events from Barcelona to New York.
